November 30, 2020: So pleased that both the Aamjiwnaang and the Kettle and Stony Point First Nations have ratified the Clench land claim settlement, with over 90% of the community members voting in favour. in the summer of 2019 I was honoured to mediate negotiations between them about how to share the settlement funds. This had been a long-outstanding issue between the communities. I was delighted that the participants used Anishinaabe legal principles and values to work out how to share the settlement proceeds. The settlement, which amounted to almost 38 million dollars, had been offered by the government of Canada in compensation for the embezzlement of their funds by a federal Indian agent in the 1850s.
